Labor Day 2019 will be on Monday, September 2nd. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated every year on the first Monday in September. The holiday was first created in the late 19th century and it became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day pays tribute to American workers. The national holiday symbolizes the end of the summer and the beginning of the school year; it is celebrated by millions with parades, barbeques, parties, and athletic events all over the country.
Here in Pensacola, we’ll take any excuse to celebrate and Labor Day is no exception. Over Labor Day weekend, we have an exciting lineup of festivities. From the Gulf Coast Summer Fest Jazz Edition to The Hub Music Festival at Bartram Park to Soul Beach Sunday Mini Festival to the Wildcat 100 Ultramarathon– there’s lots to do!
Holidays Often Mean an Uptick in Arrests
Like any national holiday, there’s a darker side of the festivities that’s less talked about, but a very real issue and that’s the uptick in arrests that comes with gatherings, large crowds, free-flowing alcohol, and in some cases, illegal drug use. Each year, local law enforcement, court officials, and criminal defense attorneys brace themselves for the surge in arrests that typically go hand-in-hand with three-day weekends.
It’s common to see an increase in the following types of arrests around the big holidays like Labor Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day:
- DUI (of alcohol or drugs)
- Assault
- Theft
- Drug possession
- Drug sales
- Indecent exposure
- Sexual battery
- Domestic violence
Labor Day can be loads of fun, especially when you get to enjoy it with friends and family. However, it’s important to drink responsibly and avoid drinking and driving. Even still, you can have the best intentions, plan for a safe holiday, and everything can go terribly wrong.
If you end up being arrested over Labor Day weekend, it’s important to act quick and secure legal representation to protect your freedom and your rights. If you find yourself facing criminal charges in Pensacola over Labor Day weekend, contact the Morris Firm, PLLC for a free consultation!
